Earls Rd Landcare Group declares its roads to be CSG Free.

Earls Rd, Yarragon Sth Rd and Womersleys Rd have been declared to be Coal Seam Gas Free by their residents.

Early this year local communities in conjunction with Lock the Gate Alliance held information sessions in Yarragon, Darnum, Drouin South and Warragul to raise awareness of their concerns about the exploitation of coal and unconventional gas in the Gippsland area and its effect on our environment, water quality and health. Poowong was the first town in Victoria to declare their area Coal Seam Gas free and some of their residents talked about their reasons and the process used.

Some of our members attended these information sessions, and it was raised as an issue to be discussed at the next landcare meeting. A speaker from the Poowong group was arranged to address us and we invited our mayor and representatives from nearby landcare groups. The response from our members was to form a Landcare Action Group on CSG.   A meeting was held and Ursula Alquier from the “Lock the Gate Alliance” was invited to attend and provide advice and assistance.

The meeting decided that we would invite our community to have their say in a one-question survey. Should we declare that this road be gas field free?

A pre survey letter was drafted to be letter-boxed. This letter provided information about the survey and suggested resources for residents to inform themselves about this issue. We then surveyed and sold many “Lock the Gate” signs. The response was overwhelming. Out of 95 responses 92 said a resounding ‘yes’ to closing our roads to CSG exploration and development.

The characteristic yellow, triangular “Lock the Gate” signs have proliferated in our area, our residents have spoken and we have become the first group in the Baw Baw Shire and the fourth community in Gippsland to declare itself CSG Free.

“It’s exciting to hear that many other communities are also surveying their areas including Darnum, Yarragon, Kongwak, Fish Creek, Briagolong and Gormandale just to name a few” said Ursula Alquier, Victorian Lock the Gate Coordinator
